It's About Time We Talk About Sabrina Claudio
21 year old Miami-native Sabrina Claudio embodies a minimalist, new age tumblr-esque aesthetic that beautifully compliments her youthful, angelic vocals. Her style boasts a strong confidence of voice that not many celebrity vets can claim they had during their debut years. The visuals that accompany Claudio's singles also play an influential role in selling her musical identity as a mysterious siren of song whose honest, vulnerable lyrics immerses the listener in a world of her creation. So relax and venture with me into the visual style review of Sabrina Claudio.
The first song (my personal favorite) "Unravel Me" illustrates a common narrative that most feel when first exploring a relationship with another person-- vulnerability. Intimacy is terrifying and this familiar feeling is threaded throughout the entire ballad.
The accompanying visual keeps it simple with a neutral color pallet that compliments Claudio's skin tone, creating a "nude" environment with sand on the floor, beige walls, and funky modern furniture. Staying on trend, the makeup remains natural and dewy. Claudio also favors a bold, statement earring to elevate her otherwise classically elegant wardrobe.
The next song "Belong to You" almost serves as the answer to the "Will they? Won't they?" question raised in "Unravel Me". The song is a complete surrender to the other person, trusting them to take care of her and be close in all possible forms and definitions.
Again, the style choices reflect the willful exposure of her innermost thoughts and desires, hence the nude lingerie set, white chiffon veil, and white button up. The variation of the classic gold hoop and simple gold rings serve as visual foreshadowing of the later ensembles that contrast the previous garb greatly.
Alright, same video, very different vibe. Gold is now a more dominant element in the following scenes to note how relationships can very quickly become one sided when one person is more committed than the other, even going so far as being greedy of the other's time. She's given the other person what they wanted-- her entire self-- and now, she belongs to them.
The last song "Stand Still" is essentially an account on the crossroads that most relationships arrive at wherein both parties must determine if their intentions for the relationship align with one another before they can move forward.
This is the first visual where her clothing is in such a significant contrast with her surroundings. There is also an exaggeration in the silhouette; the sleeves are oversize and the pleated wide legged trousers extend her legs beautifully. These elements have been prevailing on the runway as of late, which shows Claudio's keen eye and attention to detail.
All in all, Sabrina Claudio is without a doubt an artist to watch. Her strong voice, both musically and stylistically, will sustain her in an industry where those with musical prowess but no visual aesthetic can quickly fade into the background. I am a fan of an artist who can create a vivid universe and consistent narrative to which their music serves as the soundtrack. Sabrina Claudio's universe is one of essential oils, rose-applique everything, perfectly hydrated skin, and timeless style.
Sabrina Claudio's debut album About Time is now available for streaming and digital download.
